How to rotate or replace HP LaserJet 4000 Series printer feed tires.

A common complaint we hear from customers, especially those using textured letterhead and bond papers, is that they experience frequent jam messages but cannot find a jam in the printer. This is often accompanied by a groaning noise as the printer tries to feed the paper from the tray. This problem is usually caused by worn paper feed tires that cannot pull paper from the paper tray. Users may find one sheet of paper pulled loose from the tabs in the paper tray or they may not find anything out of place at all. On the HP 4000 Series printers it is a fairly simple procedure to clean and rotate the tires thereby saving the expense of a service call.

Figure 1. A worn tire (left) exhibits little or no remaining texture while a new tire (right) is heavily textured.

Because the HP 4000 Series printers use two identical tires, for paper pick-up and double feed prevention, users can clean and rotate them to extend their life. One tire typically exhibits a great deal more wear than the other so if they are rotated before one is worn out you should have them last until they are replaced with the Maintenance Kit that should be installed every 200,000 prints. We generally recommend this procedure after about 100,000 pages if you find your tires are not lasting the full 200,000.

1. Turn off and unplug the printer.

2. Remove the paper tray from the printer. Figure 2

3. Open the small cover to the left of the feed tire in the paper tray. Figure 3

4. Pinch the retaining clip on the end of the feed tire to release it from the shaft (Figure 4) and slide the tire off the shaft. Figure 5 It is not necessary to remove the small black slip clutch from the shaft.

5. Clean the Feed tire with a lint free cloth lightly dampened with water and set it aside. Do not use Alcohol or other substances to clean modern feed rollers as it may damage the rubber.

6. Inside the paper tray receptacle on the printer is another feed tire just like the one in the tray. Figure 6 Remove this tire by pinching the tab on the end of the tire and sliding it off the shaft.

7. Clean the tire with a lint free cloth lightly dampened with water.

8. Install the tire from inside the printer in the paper tray. Figure 7 Make sure that the tire clip is secure in the slot on the shaft (If not rotate the tire while gently pushing it to the right until it snaps in)

9. Close the small cover to the left of the tire. Be certain that the cover is securely snapped into place or jams will result. Figure 8

10. Reinstall the tire removed from the paper tray on the shaft in the printer. Figure 6

If problems persist replace the feed tires with a new pair or have a trained service technician examine the printer for other possible causes for your jams.
